Shrek, The Musical

July 23-25, 2020

BLOOMINGTON, IL – Congratulations to the cast of the BCPA’s summer theater production of Shrek The Musical set to open in late July.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the State of Illinois’ Stay at Home Order actors emailed their individual audition videos to the production team in early May. The videos contained actors singing to a song of their choice that best suited their vocal range as well as dancing to a dance tutorial video that was previously posted by the Shrek production team.

“Showcasing their talents in a video provided a valuable experience to the actors as well as providing a great family activity,” says Jim Mack, Performing Arts Manager at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA).

Virtual rehearsals for Shrek the Musical began on May 27th and continue in that format until Illinois moves into the next phase of the Governor’s Restore Illinois plan. Once those thresholds are met cast members would meet in small groups that adhere to the most current safety guidelines.

“The health and safety of my actors and staff come first. The BCPA is monitoring the situation and plan to take multiple precautions throughout this process,” says Bridgette Richard, director of Shrek The Musical, adding, “In the meantime we plan to have virtual music and dance rehearsals over the next month and meeting virtually with the BCPA staff to see where we stand on things based off of any new information we receive from officials.”

If the threshold is met to hold small cast rehearsals the BCPA plans to take the necessary precautions in providing a safe rehearsal and performance space for the cast and staff. This includes, but is not limited to, the continued practice of social distancing guidelines, wearing masks, checking temperatures before entering the rehearsal space, and providing additional sanitization.

“We looked into the option of streaming the performance, but the license is not available currently” added Mack “With safety being paramount, we will either live stream the performance once rights become available or push the performance dates further out if it cannot be done within the constraints of the Phasing.”

However Shrek The Musical is ultimately performed the cast is excited as Shawn Mann who is cast as the main antagonist Lord Farquaad in this production says “People are making it happen, and regardless of whether or not the cast and production team of Shrek can go on with the performance as we all hope we can, we're all just grateful for the opportunity to spend time virtually with one another, build some sense of community, and remember what the message of Shrek the Musical is all about, embracing who you are, not allowing fear to divide us, forgiveness, acceptance, and resilience, and that's all a message we need right now.”
